An ancient Buddhist cave temple carved into solid rock
Dowa Rock Temple (also known as Dowa Raja Maha Viharaya) is one of the most ancient Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, located just 6 km from Ella along the Bandarawela road. This sacred temple is famous for its colossal 38-foot Buddha statue carved directly into the granite rock face and beautifully preserved murals dating back over 2000 years.
According to local history, the temple was built by King Walagamba during his exile in the first century BCE. He is believed to have used the hidden tunnel network here as a refuge during the South Indian invasions.
The temple’s origins date back to the 1st century BCE and it has been an active place of worship ever since. The rock-cut Buddha statue remains unfinished, showcasing the unique craftsmanship of early Sri Lankan artisans. Inside the cave, colorful frescoes depict stories from Buddhist mythology and life in ancient Sri Lanka.
It is also believed that a tunnel from the temple leads all the way to Ravana Cave, symbolizing the hidden connection between Ella’s legendary sites.
